From beach bodies and well-balanced diets to plateaus and occasional injury, fitness training has its highs and lows. But as inconsistent as our efforts to stay fit may be, keeping healthy seems to find its way at the top of our New Year’s resolutions annually.
With the growing trend of athletic marathons and fitness challenges, commitment to training has its ultimate goal—making the finish line. Runners gradually increase their distance goals with the months leading to their assigned races. Aspiring Spartans physically and mentally prepare for the unthinkable obstacles that await them. Some athletes train in order to survive a mock zombie apocalypse. Participants in dye runs put together an ensemble they’re willing to stain with color. But the joy about these competitions isn’t the medal or record time; it’s setting a personal best for both professionals and novice athletes alike. And, of course, it’s a fun occasion.
Participating in a race can help you put your fitness goals into perspective. It encourages athletes to set a timeline and training schedule leading to the big day. These physical challenges also inspire friends and family to train together and take on these challenges as a team. Most importantly, you maintain your New Year’s resolution of staying in shape with good, friendly competition.
