21st Century Oncology Nurse: Kelly Lamberson, RN
By: Susan Burnell
Kelly Lamberson, has been an RN for just over a year. She received her training at Florida State College at Jacksonville. At 21st Century Oncology of Jacksonville, she educates patients, provides infusion treatments and works with colleagues to create a better experience for every patient.
Lamberson understands that patients need emotional support in their journey toward healing. “One patient was a woman in her early fifties, with a diagnosis of breast cancer,” says Lamberson. “She had been receiving treatment in our office about every three weeks. One day, when I was assigned as her nurse, she seemed overwhelmed and very distracted. I asked her how she was feeling and if she was experiencing any side effects from her treatment. When she denied experiencing any physical changes, I reminded her that it is important to focus on the emotional as well as the physical effects of chemotherapy. The patient responded with tears, and began to explain what had been going on in her personal life. I comforted her and listened to her pain and hardships.”
Sometimes as a nurse I have to stop and remember that it is just as important to assess a patient emotionally as it is physically, says Lamberson. “As a team, we always strive to go above and beyond for our patients’ health and comfort.”What gives her the greatest satisfaction? “Being able to help our patients in a time of need,” Lamberson says. “We are trained as nurses to be advocates for our patients and give the best care possible. I feel that I am surrounded by nurses who express these qualities.”
